As of January 8, 2025, the United Kingdom broadened the scope of its Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, to include travelers from non-European visa-exempt countries, including the United States and Canada. This new requirement mandates that eligible visitors obtain an ETA before traveling to the UK.
Key details of the UK ETA
-
Application process: Travelers can apply for the ETA with CIBTvisas or via a UK government channel. The application involves scanning the passport, a facial scan, and answering personal questions. The process is designed to be straightforward, typically taking about 10 minutes to complete.
-
Processing time: Decisions are usually made within three working days, with many applicants receiving approval within hours. It's advisable to apply well in advance of travel to accommodate any unforeseen delays.
-
Validity: The ETA is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and allows multiple entries into the UK during this period. Each stay can be up to six months for purposes such as tourism, visiting family and friends, business, study, certain types of work, or transit.
-
Exemptions: British and Irish citizens, as well as individuals with a valid UK visa or legal residency are exempt from the ETA requirement. Visa-exempt European citizens can continue to travel to the UK without an ETA, but it is expected that these nationalities will be added to the program at a future date.
Implications for Travelers:
The introduction of the ETA system signifies the UK's commitment to enhancing border security and streamlining the entry process for visitors. Travelers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the application process and ensure they obtain an ETA before their journey to avoid any travel disruptions.
